The Azure Window has collapsed and it is not just the top part which has fallen off – even the stacks have gone.
Strong gale force winds hit Malta yesterday, even leading Gozo Channel to suspend its services.
The violence of the storm of these last 2 days will have been right of this unique geologic monument and which made the pride of a whole nation.
Planned and dreaded, the wintry depressions of the winter 2016 had saved so far the West side. However, the weather caused important damages during the heavy swells on the East coast in October, November and January.
At the end of the winter, we could nevertheless imagine that we could again take advantage of our sublime arc, but the Nature has decided otherwise: Azure Window collapsed in this morning of March 8th, 2017.
The last big depression of the winter made tremble and collapse tragically the mythical arc Maltese.
The multithousand-year-old building crumbled off for several decades, victim of the erosion and the mass tourism which trampled it.
Now, it will be necessary to live with the loss of this jewel, even if the erosion and the warning shots of elements unchained on this side by Gozo would certainly have had his fate some day.
Let us hope that the current Maltese government and those to come will better know how to hear and protect the jewels of the archipelago so the future generations can take advantage of it durably.
